The Ankeveense Plassen are a quiet, scenic nature reserve located between Hilversum and Weesp in the heart of the Gooi region. This unique landscape of narrow lakes, reed beds and water channels was created by peat cutting centuries ago and has since evolved into a haven for wildlife and nature lovers.
The area features elongated waterways and narrow land strips that attract many rare birds, including bitterns, bearded tits and purple herons. Kingfishers and a wide range of ducks and geese are also frequently seen. Walking trails and canoe routes allow visitors to explore this peaceful environment.
Much of the reserve is managed by Natuurmonumenten and is carefully protected. Some parts are closed during bird breeding season or only accessible with a guide to preserve the natural balance.
Canoeing or paddleboarding is allowed in certain zones. The calm waters and reed-lined channels make for a relaxing and scenic outing. Starting in the village of Ankeveen, several walking and water routes lead you into this quiet world.
Ideal for birdwatchers, hikers and anyone seeking tranquility, the Ankeveense Plassen offer a breath of fresh air just outside the city.
