The Deutsches Erdölmuseum Wietze is a unique museum in Lower Saxony dedicated to the history of oil, gas, and energy. Located on a historic site where oil was extracted as early as the 17th century, it offers insight into the origin, exploration, and use of fossil fuels.
Wietze is known as the birthplace of the German oil industry. In 1858, Germany’s first oil well was drilled here – predating the famous Pennsylvania well. The museum combines indoor and outdoor exhibits and is suitable for all ages.
Inside, visitors learn about the geological formation of oil, drilling techniques throughout history, and the social impact of fossil fuels. Interactive displays, video clips, and original tools bring the past to life and link it to today’s energy debates.
Outside, a large open-air section features historic drilling towers, pumps, pipelines, and transport vehicles. You can see how oil was once extracted and moved. Children can climb on machines, take part in challenges, and explore how energy and engineering connect.
The people behind the industry are also highlighted. Their lives, equipment, and stories are presented through original photos and documents. Environmental topics, the energy transition, and alternative fuels are included, making the museum forward-looking as well as historical.
Guided tours, special events, and educational programs for schools are offered regularly. There’s a shop with books and souvenirs, and a café where visitors can relax with a snack or drink.
The museum is easily reached by car, with ample parking available. It is open from March to November with seasonal hours. Its green surroundings make it perfect to pair with a walk or bike ride.
For those interested in technology, industrial heritage, or energy, Wietze offers a rich and meaningful experience. Here you can discover how black gold shaped the world – and what we can learn from it today.
A museum where history, energy, and the future meet.
