Airborne Museum

The Airborne Museum in Oosterbeek, near Arnhem, is a powerful tribute to one of the most important battles in Dutch history: the Battle of Arnhem in September 1944. Housed in Villa Hartenstein, the former headquarters of the British airborne troops, the museum brings history to life through personal stories, original artifacts and immersive experiences.

The main exhibition focuses on Operation Market Garden, offering a clear timeline of events through the eyes of soldiers, civilians and German forces. Letters, uniforms, photographs and weapons paint a vivid picture of those dramatic days. The emphasis on real people’s stories makes the experience deeply emotional and relatable.

The highlight of the visit is the Airborne Experience, an underground walkthrough where visitors step into the shoes of a British paratrooper. Through sound, light, film and reconstructed scenes, you feel the tension and chaos of battle – from the drop over enemy territory to urban combat in Arnhem.

In addition to the permanent collection, the museum hosts temporary exhibitions on themes such as freedom, remembrance and the impact of war. School programs, lectures and special events make the museum a hub for education and reflection.
