The Texel Lighthouse, also known as Eierland Lighthouse, is one of the most iconic and beloved sights on the island. Located at the northernmost tip of Texel, this sturdy red tower has stood proudly since 1864. The lighthouse offers not only a rich history but also spectacular views over the North Sea, the Wadden Sea, and the vast island itself.
A visit to the lighthouse begins with a walk through the dune landscape. The surroundings are beautiful and peaceful, with views of sea and beach in every direction. Once you reach the tower, the real adventure begins. You climb 118 steps to the top, where from the viewing platform at 45 meters high, you are treated to a wide panorama. On clear days, you can even see the nearby island of Vlieland.
What makes the Texel Lighthouse special is that you stand between two seas: the calmer Wadden Sea on one side and the wilder North Sea on the other. This unique view is a highlight for many visitors. On your way up, you can also learn about the lighthouse’s history. During World War II, the tower was heavily damaged and later restored, with parts of the old brickwork still visible.
The lighthouse is open to visitors all year round, and each season offers a different experience. In summer, you can enjoy the sun and beach life, while in winter you can witness the power of nature. Children love the adventure of climbing to the top and spotting ships at sea.
For photographers, the lighthouse is a dream, both during the day and at sunset. The red tower contrasts beautifully with the sky and landscape, offering endless photo opportunities.
The Texel Lighthouse is more than just a monument; it is a symbol of the island, a place where nature, history, and breathtaking views come together. Whether it’s your first time on Texel or you’ve been here before, the lighthouse always offers something special.
