Muiderslot is one of the Netherlands' best-preserved castles. Situated where the river Vecht meets the IJmeer, near Amsterdam, this medieval fortress has stood for over 700 years. Complete with towers, drawbridge and moat, it looks like it stepped straight out of a storybook.
Built around 1285 by Count Floris V, the castle later became the home of poet and historian P.C. Hooft. In the 17th century, it served as a cultural hub for writers, artists and thinkers.
Visitors can explore the castle rooms filled with armor, paintings, furniture and historical displays. Children can join interactive treasure hunts and dress up as knights or noble ladies.
The surrounding gardens are laid out in 17th-century style, with herbs, fruit trees and decorative flowerbeds. In summer, special events include falconry shows, open-air theatre and traditional crafts.
Muiderslot is easily accessible by bike, car or even boat from Amsterdam. The museum café offers refreshments with castle views, and the shop sells books and souvenirs inspired by the past.
Whether you're into history, architecture or a day out by the water, Muiderslot is a magical destination for all ages.
