The Church of Our Lady, also known as the Grote Kerk, is the iconic landmark of Breda. Located on the Grote Markt, this magnificent Gothic church rises high above the city. Construction began in the 15th century, and the impressive 97-meter-high tower can be seen from afar. The church represents not only religious importance but also history, art, and culture.
Inside, you are immediately struck by the grandeur of the space. High vaulted ceilings, richly decorated pillars, and stunning stained-glass windows leave a lasting impression. A unique feature is the tomb of Engelbrecht II of Nassau, an ancestor of the Dutch royal family, giving the church the nickname “Royal Church.”
The Church of Our Lady played a significant role in Breda’s history. It was the religious center for the House of Nassau, who made Breda their residence. Guided tours reveal stories of power, faith, and architecture. You can also climb the church tower for a breathtaking view over Breda and the surrounding area.
Besides religious services, the church hosts concerts, exhibitions, and cultural events, making every visit a new experience.
The church is open to visitors, and during summer, additional activities such as organ concerts and guided walks are offered. The lively Grote Markt around the church, with its terraces and shops, makes it a perfect spot for a day out.
A visit to the Church of Our Lady is a journey through time, where Gothic architecture, Dutch history, and royal tales come together.
