The Church of Our Lady in Kortrijk is one of the most remarkable medieval churches in Flanders. Located along the banks of the River Leie, near the famous Broel Towers, this church radiates history, art, and religious tradition. Built in the 13th century, it was originally connected to the castle of Kortrijk and played an important role in the religious and political life of the city.
Upon entering, you are immediately struck by the calm and beauty of the interior. Gothic vaults, colorful stained-glass windows, and numerous artworks tell the story of centuries of faith and craftsmanship. One of the highlights is the Count’s Chapel, built in 1370 by Louis of Male. Here you’ll find statues and coats of arms of the Counts of Flanders, unique in their kind.
The church also houses an impressive baroque organ, and during concerts, the space is filled with beautiful music. Beyond its religious role, the Church of Our Lady is also a place of remembrance. The famous Order of the Golden Fleece was founded here in the 15th century, giving the church significance in European history.
Outside, enjoy views of the Leie and the peaceful surroundings. The church is open to visitors and located within walking distance of other historic sites in Kortrijk.
A visit to the Church of Our Lady is a journey back in time, where art, faith, and history come together.
