National Park Lauwersmeer, located on the border of Groningen and Friesland, is one of the youngest national parks in the Netherlands. Once part of the Wadden Sea, the area transformed into a unique natural landscape after it was closed off from the sea in 1969. Today, it features open waters, grasslands, wetlands and reed beds teeming with life.
Covering around 6000 hectares, the park offers endless opportunities for walking, cycling, boating and birdwatching. The ever-changing landscape makes it a haven for nature lovers. Each season brings new sights: blooming orchids in spring, and flocks of geese in winter.
Lauwersmeer is a vital stopover for migratory birds and home to rare species such as white-tailed eagles, bluethroats and spoonbills. Observation towers and bird hides allow visitors to watch birds quietly in their natural habitat. The park is also a certified Dark Sky Park, perfect for stargazing without artificial light interference.
There are marked trails for hiking and biking, and waterways for exploring by boat. Popular spots include Ezumakeeg, Jaap Deensgat and the visitor centre Lauwersnest, which offers information, exhibitions and guided tours.
Children can enjoy nature play areas and adventure trails, while water sports enthusiasts can sail, canoe or fish on the Lauwersmeer.
Easily accessible by car, the park is close to villages like Lauwersoog, Anjum and Zoutkamp. Restaurants, campsites and holiday parks make it an ideal destination for a day trip or a longer stay.
National Park Lauwersmeer offers peace, open space and natural beauty – where land and water come together.
