The Cheese Market in Alkmaar is a vibrant tradition dating back to 1593, offering a unique glimpse into the historical cheese trade of the Netherlands. Every Friday from late March to late September, the Waagplein transforms into a colorful spectacle where cheese porters in traditional attire carry large cheese wheels on wooden barrows.
The event starts at 10:00 AM with the ringing of the bell and continues until 1:00 PM. Visitors can witness how cheeses are weighed in the Waag building and how traders negotiate prices, all following centuries-old customs. During the summer months of July and August, evening cheese markets are also held on Tuesdays from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM, often accompanied by a craft market and children's activities.
The Waagplein is about a 10-minute walk from Alkmaar Central Station and is easily accessible by public transport. Several parking garages are available around the square.
A visit to the Cheese Market in Alkmaar is not only a cultural experience but also a feast for the senses, with the aroma of cheese, the sound of clogs on cobblestones, and the sight of age-old traditions coming to life.
