National Park De Groote Peel is a unique nature reserve on the border between North Brabant and Limburg. Known for its vast peat bogs, rich birdlife and tranquil atmosphere, it offers open landscapes, marshes, woodland and wooden boardwalks – perfect for nature lovers, hikers and anyone seeking peace.

Covering around 1500 hectares, the park was once a major site for peat cutting. Today, it’s a protected area where nature has reclaimed its place, offering a mix of water, land and sky that creates stunning views and a deep sense of calm.

De Groote Peel is a birdwatcher’s paradise. Over 200 species have been recorded here, including cranes, bitterns and bluethroats. During spring and autumn, the park is a key stopover for migratory birds.

Several marked walking trails lead visitors through the park, ranging from short walks to longer hikes. The famous Knuppelbrugpad leads you over wooden bridges through the peat bogs. Along the way, observation towers and signs provide information about the nature and history of the area.

The visitor centre ‘Buitencentrum De Pelen’ in Ospel is the ideal starting point. Here, you can find information, exhibitions, a shop and a cosy café. Guided tours, workshops and children’s activities make the park enjoyable for all ages.

The park is open all year, with each season offering a different charm: misty autumn mornings, fresh spring growth, summer’s openness and winter’s stillness. The area is largely car-free and best explored on foot or by bike.

Whether you’re here to watch birds, enjoy the silence or simply escape daily life, National Park De Groote Peel offers a sanctuary of nature, peace and wonder.
