Atlantikwall Raversyde in Ostend is one of the best-preserved parts of the Atlantic Wall in Europe. This open-air museum immerses visitors in the military past of the Belgian coast, with over sixty bunkers, observation posts, and trenches from both World Wars. Nestled in the dunes near the sea, it offers a moving combination of history, nature, and silence.
The site is divided into two parts. The first features the German defensive line from World War I, built in 1915 under Kaiser Wilhelm II. The second section presents a large bunker complex from World War II, constructed by the German occupiers as part of the Atlantic Wall. Both areas are remarkably well-preserved, offering a rare, authentic look at wartime life.
A clearly marked walking trail guides you through the site. Audio guides and panels share personal stories from soldiers and civilians. You’ll walk through bunkers, peer out over the sea, and reflect on the impact of war on people and landscapes.
Education and experience are central to the museum’s mission. Families can follow interactive routes, and children can complete discovery tasks. Schools are welcomed with tailored programs focusing on heritage, history, and peace. The mix of physical remains and human stories brings history to life.
Beyond the military history, the natural surroundings are part of the experience. Atlantikwall Raversyde belongs to the Raversyde provincial domain, a peaceful area with dunes, walking trails, and ocean views. It’s a place for remembrance and quiet reflection.
After your visit, enjoy a picnic by the sea or relax in the visitor pavilion. The site is close to the beach and easily accessible by coastal tram or bicycle.
Atlantikwall Raversyde is not a typical museum—it’s a place that speaks. A space where history, landscape, and memory come together to tell a powerful story.
Whether you're interested in wartime history, heritage, or just a meaningful outing by the sea, this site will leave a lasting impression.
