De Verwachting is a charming, fully operational grain windmill located in the village of Hollum on the Dutch island of Ameland. Originally built in 1840 and beautifully restored in 1991, the mill is now both a historical monument and an active site for grain milling and mustard production.
Set on a small hill, the windmill is a classic Dutch design with a thatched roof and rotating sails. Guided tours by volunteer millers offer fascinating insights into the workings of the mill, traditional techniques, and the important role wind played in rural life.
One unique aspect of De Verwachting is the mustard mill located on the ground floor. Here, locally ground grain is used to produce authentic Amelander mustard. Visitors can watch the process, taste the results and purchase jars as souvenirs.
The site also includes fun and educational activities for children, and outdoor demonstrations are sometimes held in good weather. A small shop offers mustard, flour and other regional products.
Located within walking distance of the village center and other cultural attractions, De Verwachting is easy to visit and partially wheelchair accessible.
A trip to this windmill offers a blend of heritage, craft, flavor and island charm – a delightful stop for curious minds and lovers of local tradition.
