National Park Hoge Kempen is Belgium’s first and largest national park, located in the province of Limburg. Spanning over 12,000 hectares, it features vast pine forests, rolling heathlands, crystal-clear lakes, sand dunes and panoramic views from former mining hills.

The park is perfect for hiking, cycling and nature exploration. There are more than 400 km of marked walking trails, from short routes to long-distance hikes. Popular areas include Mechelse Heide, Lieteberg and Pietersheim. Cyclists can enjoy the Limburg cycling network that runs through the park’s scenic landscapes.

Hoge Kempen is also shaped by its mining heritage. The terrils, or mining heaps, now serve as vantage points with far-reaching views, sometimes as far as Germany. The park’s rich biodiversity includes rare butterflies, dragonflies, amphibians and birds like nightjars and woodlarks.

There are six official park gateways: Kattevennen, Mechelse Heide, Pietersheim, Lieteberg, Station As and Duinengordel. Each offers a visitor centre with information, themed exhibitions, and starting points for walks, workshops and guided activities.

Children can explore nature play areas, barefoot trails and treasure hunts. For those seeking peace, the park offers quiet zones to relax and listen to the sounds of nature.

Easily accessible from towns like Genk, Maasmechelen and Lanaken, the park also offers restaurants, accommodation and recreational options, making it ideal for a day trip or a nature-filled weekend.

National Park Hoge Kempen delivers pure nature, variety and freedom all year round.
