The Red Cliff (De Rode Klif) near the Frisian village of Warns is one of Friesland’s most striking natural and historical landmarks. This approximately ten-meter-high ridge overlooks the IJsselmeer and owes its name to the reddish-brown boulder clay deposited during the penultimate ice age.

The site is especially known for the Battle of Warns, fought here on September 26, 1345. In this decisive confrontation, Frisian warriors defeated the army of Count William IV of Holland. The battle is remembered as a symbol of Frisian independence and freedom. A large boulder on the cliff bears the inscription "Leaver dea as slaef" – better dead than a slave.

Visitors come not only for the historical significance but also for the peace, views and nature. The cliff is part of the Frisian Coastal Path and a popular stop for hikers and cyclists. Every year in late September, the site hosts a commemorative event.

A visit to De Rode Klif is a powerful combination of nature, heritage and reflection – a place that invites contemplation amid the vast Frisian landscape.
