Natuurgebied de Pluimpot

Natuurgebied De Pluimpot is located on the Dutch island of Tholen, near the village of Sint-Maartensdijk. This unique tidal area was formed after the closure of the Oosterschelde in the 1960s, and since then, nature has been allowed to flourish freely. De Pluimpot is a peaceful haven, where water, mudflats, and salt marshes meet, immersing visitors in the raw beauty of nature.

The area is especially known as a paradise for birdwatchers. Throughout the year, you can observe numerous bird species that rest, breed, or forage here. Avocets, spoonbills, redshanks, and black-tailed godwits are frequently seen. Thanks to the open landscape, you have excellent views of the birds, especially from the special observation points set up in the reserve.

Besides birds, De Pluimpot is home to salt-loving plants like sea lavender, glasswort, and sea aster. In spring and summer, these plants turn the landscape into a colorful display of purple, red, and green. It’s a dynamic area, shaped daily by the rhythm of the tides, bringing constant change and vitality.

The area is managed by Staatsbosbeheer, with a focus on preserving this unique ecosystem. By allowing controlled saltwater flow, the area remains vibrant and rich in species.
