The ruins of Schloss Hohenurach rise above the town of Bad Urach, offering one of the most scenic and historically rich destinations in the Swabian Jura. This medieval castle ruin, set atop a steep wooded hill, combines natural beauty with a fascinating past.

Built in the 11th century as a strategic fortress, it later served as a ducal residence and even a state prison under the Duchy of Württemberg. Notable prisoners included the poet Philipp Nikodemus Frischlin. The castle was abandoned in the 18th century and partially dismantled. What remains today are substantial walls, gates, and foundations.

The site is accessible only by foot. A well-marked trail leads from the center of Bad Urach to the castle in about 30 to 45 minutes. Along the way, interpretive signs explain the castle’s architecture and historical importance.

At the summit, visitors are rewarded with panoramic views of the Erms Valley, the Albtrauf cliffs, and even the distant Alps on clear days. The ruins themselves are freely accessible and provide a quiet, atmospheric setting ideal for a picnic, rest, or scenic photography.

While there are no facilities at the top, the site is open year-round and entry is free. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes and bring water, especially during warm seasons.

The trail to Schloss Hohenurach is part of the well-known Grafensteige hiking network, making it a rewarding goal for outdoor enthusiasts. Families with older children will also find the hike and destination both fun and educational.

For those interested in medieval history, castles, or scenic hikes in southern Germany, Schloss Hohenurach offers a blend of history, nature, and tranquility that leaves a lasting impression.
